According to Wikipedia, “An armistice is a formal agreement of warring parties to stop fighting.”
In 1918 an Armistice between the Allies and the Central Powers was signed in Marshal Ferdinand Foch’s private railway car. The signing took place in the Forest of Compiegne, about 60 kilometers north of Paris.
The Armistice took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – 11:00 a.m. on November 11th. It brought an end to the hostilities of World War I, a war in which almost 10 million soldiers died, over 21 million were wounded and nearly 8 million were reported missing.
It was the Great War, the War to End All Wars.
